Helen Philippe Woodhouse

Philippe is not your ordinary dream character from a novel. She is harsh and has a mind of her own, but everyone still loves her just the same. She isn't pretty, yet she can charm anyone with a few witty words from her immense and forever-growing vocabulary. She is stubborn and determined, never giving up even if the chance is right in front of her long nose. Get ready to meet a character you'll never forget, Philippe Woodhouse, the brilliant and headstrong oldest sister of The Woodhouse Girls.

Helen Philippe Woodhouse

Age: 8 in the prologue, 15 in ‘Seven Years Later’, and 16 in the first chapter.

Complexion: Glossy and dark, curly copper/auburn hair that reaches a little past her ribs. She usually wears her hair in a flowing braid over her shoulder or it in a bird’s nest-like bun/chignon. Flashing dusky green eyes, peach skin, and full rosy lips. Philippe has an intense and flashy blush which often surges to her face when her anger or other strong emotion are high. She has a somewhat long nose which becomes peppered with freckles in the summertime and is at all times to be found in a novel. In her older teenage years, the rest of her face features grow and slightly diminish the size of her nose. Frizzled bangs hide her broad forehead. Philippe has thick black eyelashes and unusually dark brows which make her skin look even more pale than it should be when she is worried. When she is younger her face is thin and pointed, but as her form fills out, it attains some plumpness adding to her pleasant charm.

Personality and other: Philippe was born with the natural instinct for leadership in her veins like her headstrong father of whom she is almost an exact replica excpet in that her form is more like that of her mother’s. Philippe is extremely uncooperative if she has her mind set on something. She can be either playful or serious and harsh under separate circumstances. In the Prologue, when Frederic Baker gives the girls money for a new start in life, Philippe is the one in charge of finding the property and supervising the building of the cottage, along with keeping her sisters in check during this trying time. She has a uncanny way of looking at everyone using the advantage of her steady green eyes to quell many. Philippe enjoys looking pretty and fashionable in florid dresses and is perhaps a bit vain on this point. She likes to be admired by others. Though she is not altogether beautiful, she is kind and charming and has a knack for pleasing all adding to her popularity. She has a beautiful, deep, crooning voice with a slight vibrato which is thought of highly by her friends and family. Teddy and her enjoy composing little tunes together on winter nights when Teddy isn’t as busy with his farm chores. Philippe is bluntly and forthrightly annoyed when people aren’t frank and open with her, and hates to have people beat around the bush when getting to an important point. She is thus a bit impatient. Philippe can be talkative around people she knows well or whom she knows little but likes upon first sight, but otherwise is modest and shy (however necessarily timid). She has a talent for art, like her sister Anna, and enjoys drawing and painting plants and small insects. She likes to go into the forest by herself to draw, or take her easel into the front yard and paint the nature scenery around her. Philippe is uncommonly clear-headed and clever, able to get out of gruesome situations more easily than she would like to admit. However, inside she can often feel as if things and people are constantly pulling at her making her feel ill-equipped, overwhelmed, and insecure. She tries hard to be a good example for her innocent younger sisters, especially Beth who is delicate and sensitive. Philippe can unfortunately be a bit prejudiced against new people she meets. Her impulsive and heedless nature often lead her to do things she later regrets.

Clothing: Elegant dark green taffeta dress hemmed with lace and with a full, pleated skirt, neat whalebone basque buttoned down the front with steel cut buttons, neckline trimmed with ivory lace, and wide red sateen ribbon around her slender waist. Black leather button boots with slight heels complete this attire making her look tall and imposing. Or else she will wear: a yellow and white striped muslin dress with the fashionable low neckline of the period and white apron. Philippe normally always wears pearls earrings with her all of her outfits unless the day is a gardening or haying day (she fears, not unreasonably, that she will loose the earrings given to her by her grandmother). Philippe is aware that she looks most becoming in the color maroon, this she tries to wear dresses of this color when possible.

Favorite things: Philippe likes to ice-skate in the winter though she knows it is highly improper for young ladies to do so. It often helps her clear her mind when she is in a frizzle. She also likes to dance the ‘Virginia reel’ at barn dances, drink tea with her sisters, have company, and to laugh.
